Tony Hawk 3 + 4 Remasters Canned After Dev Merger, Says Tony Hawk

A remastered collection of PS1 and PS2 classics Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 was planned by Vicarious Visions, until the studio merged with Activision Blizzard. That's according to the legendary skateboarder himself, who revealed the news during a Twitch livestream yesterday.

He said the plan was to remaster the third and fourth entries even up until the release day of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 on PS4. Once the developer was absorbed by the Overwatch and Diablo developer, Activision did take pitches from external studios, but reportedly wasn't satisfied with any of them. Vicarious Visions has since aided in the development of Diablo 2: Resurrected.

Talking on the livestream, Tony Hawk said: "That was the plan, even up until the release day of [1 and 2], we were going 3 and 4. And then Vicarious got kinda absorbed and then they were looking for other developers and then it was over."

Hawk added Activision "didn't really trust anyone the way they did Vicarious" to remaster the third and fourth titles. "So they took other pitches from other studios, like 'what would you do with the THPS title?' and they didn't like anything they heard. And then that was it."

In May 2021, a drummer from the band CKY said they were working on a new Tony Hawk title, which was presumably this project as the group's music is part of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 soundtrack. "I believe we're doing the new one coming out too," Jess Margera said at the time. That work will never see the light of day not, it seems. Fast forward to today and Vicarious Visions is "fully dedicated to existing Blizzard games and initiatives" like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

Aww man, 3 was my favorite one and I was really hoping to get a remaster. What a shame, and fuck Activision once again

This is sad. Thps 1 + 2 were amazing remasters. Great reviews and a decent community. I guess it goes to show, Activison only cares for the bottom line.
