The city of Uvalde, Texas, and its police department are trying to block the release of public records from last month’s deadly attack on an elementary school where law enforcement was accused of responding too slowly.

According to a letter obtained by Vice News from an attorney representing Uvalde, local authorities fear that some of the material could have “highly embarrassing information” related to the police response.

The letter was written by a private law firm to lobby the state’s attorney general, who will rule which records ultimately will be released to the public.

They also argue that many records should remain private as the shooting is investigated by state and federal authorities.

The attempt to slow the release of potentially “embarrassing” information is unlikely to help the Uvalde police in their public-image battle.

In the wake of the attack, trust in local authorities sunk further, as they contradicted themselves and corrected the timeline on several occasions.

At one point, the Uvalde police department and school-district police reportedly stopped cooperating with the state investigation into the shooting. »

House Democrat calls for Clarence Thomas to resign following report of wife’s email with Eastman

The call came less than a day after The Washington Post reported that the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol has obtained email communication between Ginni Thomas and Eastman. »

Ukraine has proved its mettle by achieving important victories in the battles of Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Sumy, causing Putin’s blitzkrieg to fail spectacularly.

Instead of focusing on Putin’s feelings, the United States and Europe should focus on practical steps to help Ukraine prevail. »

The public records Uvalde is trying to suppress include body camera footage, photos, 911 calls, emails, text messages, criminal records, and more.

The city wrote the letter asking Paxton for a determination about what information it is required to release to the public, which is standard practice in Texas.

Paxton's office will eventually rule which of the city's arguments have merit and will determine which, if any, public records it is required to release. »
