An 8-year-old boy vacationing in South Carolina was fatally shot when a man shooting randomly at passing cars struck his family’s vehicle, authorities said Tuesday.

Quarius Naqua Dunham, a third grader from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was fatally injured in the shooting Saturday near Florence, the Florence County Sheriff's Office said.

Quarius’ father, who was driving the car, was struck in the leg, the release said. The boy was shot in his neck and pronounced dead at a local hospital Monday, NBC Boston reported.

Charles Montgomery Allen, 40, was arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and other crimes, the sheriff's office said.

“Investigators allege that Allen fired multiple random rounds at passing vehicles,” the office said. No motive has been determined.

In a statement, Portsmouth Schools Superintendent Steve Zadravec said Quarius — a third grader — was vacationing with his family in South Carolina at the time of the shooting, according to NBC Boston.

“An event like this touches our community as a whole,” he said. “Our hearts are with the family as we support each other through this unbelievable tragedy.”

Portsmouth Mayor Deaglan McEachern told the station: "You go on vacation to make memories that last a lifetime with your kids, and for this tragedy to befall this family, I was just sick to my stomach."

It wasn't immediately clear whether Montgomery, who is being held at the Florence County Detention Center, has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.

Every morning I wake up and look at the news and I always end up regretting it.

I talk to people who think they are getting monitored and tracked constantly.

The way their delusions manifest and impact their lives are quite terrifying. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy that they think random people at the grocery are following them around, or putting metal filings in their oatmeal to control their minds.

Without medication and treatment, they are time bombs, mostly for themselves, statistically.

This is what the shooter said at his bond hearing:

Can I say that I have been a victim here well over two years? Every device I have has been hacked. Every device, my cell phones. My TV. I can’t even get a signal at my home to watch TV. Like there is some kind of jammer in the area. I have been a total victim for well over two years. And I said over and over and over I did not want anyone to get hurt. This is not the first. The first time I went and stole some stuff from the store. Just to see if there was still law and order. In existence, to what’s been going on in my life. That was when I came in here for stealing some Raisin Bran. I have a clean record. I have never been a criminal in my life. I came home about two years ago from truck driving. And something has been after me. I can’t explain it. It is out of my realm of understanding. But, to say that’s not the case would be a lie. And I have never had bad intentions toward anyone in my life.

I’m so lost right now. I’ve been lost for two years. Trying to figure out how my devices can be hacked. And I can have audibles in my home. But, barely. Like barely audibles coming into my home you know saying things. And they’re directional. I mean it’s barely audible. It’s not something in my head. It’s barely audible. It’s a noise. It’s a sound.

Remember, if you're against red flag laws you support this person's right to own a gun.
