Qutub Minar and it surrounding complex, including the Quwwat Ul Islam mosque, was built in 1193 AD as a victory monument by Qutubuddin Aibak, an Afghan general, who had conquered the city of Delhi while performing a raid with his overlord, Mahmud Ghori. Built of brick and faced with stone, it is still the tallest building of its type. It is one of three World Heritage Sites in Delhi, and is a city icon. The complex was built using stone recycled from existing temples, and hence features an interesting profusion of Hindu and Jain religious motifs like bells, lotuses, nymphs, and animals. Many of these were slightly defaced in order to notionally adhere to the Islamic principle of non-depiction of living beings in art and architecture, however they unwittingly began the fusion of Indic and Islamic schools of thought which only solidified through the centuries and now forms the basis of North Indian and Pakistani life.

I took this photo early in the morning to avoid crowds. My gear comprise of a Sony A7iii and a 24-105mm F4 G lens. The settings were RAW, ISO 100, f11, 24mm, and 1/200s. Postprocessed in Lightroom.
