Ukrainian officials said Russia fired missiles into Kyiv on Thursday — as United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres visited the capital city to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Two missiles hit Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky District, the Kyiv Independent reported, adding that there were no air raid sirens at the time of the strike.

"Russia [struck] Kyiv with cruise missiles right when [Guterres] and Bulgarian PM [Kiril Petkov] visit our capital," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote in a tweet.

Mykhailo Podolyak, Zelenskyy's top advisor, said the strikes hit downtown Kyiv during Guterres' official visit.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post on Telegram that one of the missiles hit the lower floors of a residential building and that at least three people were hospitalized.

The extent of the damage is not immediately known.

Guterres had wrapped up a press conference with Zelenskyy about an hour before the strikes occurred, the Associated Press reported. The UN chief met with Zelenskyy just two days after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Before his meeting in Kyiv, Guterres also toured the areas around Kyiv that were the target of Russian bombardment earlier in the war.

Guterres told the Portuguese outlet RTP he was "shocked" by the missiles that followed his visit, Reuters reported.

"There was an attack on Kyiv... it shocked me, not because I'm here but because Kyiv is a sacred city for Ukrainians and Russians alike," he said.

It happened like a few kilometres from my house, I could even see the giant black smoke from the explosion.

Interestingly, if this had killed the UN secretary general it would be the second UN SG to have died in a warzone.

Russia is trying really hard to get the rest of the world involved without directly attacking them.
