April 23 (Reuters) - Russian forces have made no major gains in the last 24 hours despite increased activity, as Ukrainian counterattacks continue to hinder their efforts, British military intelligence said on Saturday.
Despite Russia's claimed conquest of the port city of Mariupol, heavy fighting continues to frustrate Moscow's attempts to capture the city, impeding their progress in the Donbas region, the Ministry of Defence tweeted in a regular bulletin.
Russia's air and maritime forces have not established control in either domain owing to the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air and sea defences, it said.

Unsurprising considering Russia acts on artificial timelines instead of what the situation on the ground actually looks like. Not much of anything was gained this week on the eastern front, despite being touted as the 'the next big push' that started on Monday.
Russia gave up on trying to take the whole of Mariupol and settled for Mariupol* with an asterisk being the city excluding the massive fortress where thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are holding up. Judging from the now infamous video of Putin and Shoigu, they don't seem particularly happy about having to give up on Azovstal. Not much of a celebrational atmosphere for a supposedly important 'victory'.
And the clock is ticking. The heavy stuff is now being sent to Ukraine.

Losses? Spent supplies, fuel, ammo, tanks, vehicles, helis, etc. Soldiers, officers.
And time? Time is not on Putin's side.
