God of War director asks fans to be patient for Ragnarök news: ‘Something cool is coming’

Sony Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog has asked fans to remain patient for news on the upcoming sequel God of War Ragnarök.

Barlog directed 2007’s God of War 2 and the acclaimed 2018 series reboot God of War, which celebrates the fourth anniversary of its release today.

And in a video published on Wednesday, he addressed a lack of updates on the game’s upcoming follow-up, Ragnarök.

“Speaking of God of War Ragnarök, the elephant in the room… We haven’t said a lot about this – that’s because everybody is heads down, hard at work,” he said.

“We are perfectionists. Everyone’s tightening up the graphics on level three, there is so much going on right now that I just wish that we could share it with you, but it’s just not ready to be shown.

“But I guarantee you, the moment, the very second that we have something that we’re ready to share, we’re going to share it, because we don’t want to hold any of this back.

“So, please hold tight, know that something cool is coming, and that we, everybody here at Santa Monica, is so incredibly thankful for all the support you’ve given us.”

The God of War franchise debuted in 2005 and is one of PlayStation’s best-selling IPs.

Unlike previous entries in the series, which were inspired by Greek mythology, 2018’s series reboot was loosely based on Norse mythology.

As of August 2021, God of War had sold 19.5 million copies for PS4, according to Sony. The game was released for PC in January 2022.

Sequel God of War Ragnarök, which was originally planned for release in 2021 prior to a delay, is currently scheduled to arrive for PS4 and PS5 later this year.

Barlog revealed last September that he wasn’t returning to direct God of War Ragnarök. The sequel is being directed by fellow series veteran Eric Williams, who joined Santa Monica Studio in 2004 and has worked on every God of War game as a designer, specifically focused on combat.

It was reported in March that Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are developing a live-action God of War TV series.

According to Deadline, the iconic action-adventure franchise is being adapted for TV by The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins.

Amazon was said to be in negotiations with Sony to secure the God of War streaming rights for Prime Video.
