I've had two encounters with rattle snakes. In both cases, hearing the rattle caused my hindbrain to skip a beat, I went still and start scanning around me.. in both cases the snake was literally 8 feet in front of me on the path. In both cases, I gave it a width berth amd we went on our respective ways.
Both of these were timber rattlesnakes, a very rare thing.. I've been hiking basically every weekend for 30 years.. and I've seen 2.. I can only imagine there were more I never saw.

Hiking in back country...
Snakes like to warm themselves on flat rocks.
This is why I wear hiking boots and gators.
