I love this. My granddad taught me how to play and I'd give anything to play with him again, even if by phone.

If he enjoys this you should set up grandpa a computer with webcam and an online chess game so they can keep playing this way no matter the distance that comes between them.

Good on him. It's a fantastic way to bond.
I used to do the same with both my grandpa's (obviously at different times) as well as my dad's uncle.
Some great memories to remember them.
