Hugh Thompson a heli pilot helped stopped this horrific act. They had already killed 300-500 civilians and would have killed more if he didn't come in and stop it. He landed his heli and stopped an American unit going towards more civilians.
Man I just read about this in a book I'm reading. A helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson Jr. was flying over head and landed in between the soldiers and the villagers in an attempt to stop them.
The book is called "On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society". My Lai Massacre was an event that showed how far we had come since WWII in making people into killers.
