Context? I don't follow the news closely anymore. Is this over COVID?

Public school is a dumpster fire right now. My wife is a middle school teacher in an average suburban town. About twenty percent of staff are out daily, classes are down a third. Everyone is sick. Teachers have to cover classes on their prep time, so they have no (paid) planning time, or down time at all. There’s no end in sight. And every attempt to ask for help is promptly turned down and Covid is to blame. Couldn’t be the working conditions, pay and benefits that are driving staff away.
