I see why a local church with a small staff that actually contributes to the community should be tax exempt. My problem arises when mega churches have pastors making millions and living in church owned mansions and flying on church funded private jets. its a difficult situation because many churches I am sure honestly do a good job of acting as a non profit while others exploit the system and act obscenely.
