My dad used to tell me stories of having to swim around his ship in 1961 while in the navy. They jumped in.

All my fears in one picture! Big ships and open water.

For those wondering, the middle of the ocean is actually pretty dead. Animals (e.g., sharks) are concentrated around the coasts where most of the nutrients are (and those nutrients feed the bottom of the food web, and then they feed the next level up the food web, etc.). It has the biodiversity of the Sahara out there, http://www.giscourse.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/BiodiveristyMap.jpg

edit: Some people have misunderstood what I said. I didn't say that there is no life out there. Look at this map of tagged sharks. Look at where they're concentrated. https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/2xgCIziLmfvgjRSKASux_eIKMbU=/100x189:894x605/fit-in/1200x630/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/11737991/shark_week_2018_image_sharks_and_fishing_0.png
