The oldest living World War II veteran in America has died at the age of 112.

Lawrence Brooks passed away at his home in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans on Tuesday, nola.com reports.

Morris Thompson Jr., the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, said about Brooks in an email to church members.

The Black Army veteran was born in 1909 in Norwood, Louisiana, and raised by his sharecropper parents just outside of Stephenson, Mississippi.
