I work in the lab at a I guess we might call it smallish/medium community hospital. I remember over the summer, when it seemed like we might be rounding the corner, we might have been seeing like 1 or 2 positives per shift. Couple dozen a week maybe. It's insanity now. I think we're doing like 150-200 tests per day. And getting like 50, 60, 70 positives every single day.
We were setting aside the positive ones to freeze, send downtown for sequencing so they could track variants and whatnot, but the freezer started to overfill with positive swabs so we pretty much gave that up.
We got a shipment of 36 boxes of tests, 10 tests per box, and we were out within like 2 days. We're getting multiple shipments per week of like hundreds of tests, borrowing tests from other hospitals. It seems like it's sort of holding for now but eventually we will hit supply chain issues with those too. The pace is just not sustainable. I wouldn't be surprised if the core lab is going through thousands of tests a day.
People sleeping in the ER, waiting for beds to open on the floors. Patients dying all the time. And then I go out and see people not even wearing a mask. Or see anti-vax shit on social media and I can't decide if I want to punch someone or just curl up in a ball and cry.
We really need help here, guys. We're barely holding on.
Edit: thanks for the support guys. I appreciate it. I have an outlook as we will get through this. But there will be pain and loss and frustration and despair. It won't be easy but we are generally optimistic as a species. Get vaxxed everybody! Boosted if you can!
Being from Ohio, I would like to point out that this isn't six hospitals, this is an ad from six hospital SYSTEMS that cover dozens and dozens of hospitals.
These hospitals are swamped with undereducated and arrogantly ignorant people.
