I was in Tienanmen Square a year before this...Went on a school trip to China in 1988.
1989 was a crazy year. The Lockerbie bombing was still in the news, Japanese emperor Hirohito died, Exxon Valdez oil spill, Tienanmen square, Ollie North (Iran Contra) trial, Hurricane Hugo, Jim Bakker Trial (I grew up in Charlotte so both of those were big news), Berlin Wall falling, etc. Crazy times.
