The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis on Friday released a 46-page report confirming what was readily apparent to most reasonable, informed Americans: The Trump administration made “deliberate efforts” to undermine America’s response to Covid-19 for political purposes.

Most of the documents cited in the committee’s report have already been made public, including ones that show how the administration played down the importance of testing and even prevented public officials from holding briefings to educate the public on the highly contagious disease. New information released Friday, however, further illustrates how public health officials were put in difficult positions by the administration.

In May 2020, for instance, the administration shelved the Centers for Disease Control’s mask guidance for churchgoers, reportedly because the White House feared a backlash from Trump’s religious supporters. In response, the deputy director for infectious diseases at the CDC wrote in an email that he was “very troubled … that there will be people who will get sick and perhaps die because of what we were forced to do.”

Dr. Deborah Birx also lamented the influence of “fringe groups” who peddled the dangerous idea of herd immunity.

“These are people who believe that all the curves are predetermined and mitigation is irrelevant — they are a fringe group without grounding in epidemics, public health or on the ground common sense experience,” the administration’s Covid-19 response coordinator wrote to Marc Short, then-chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, in Aug. 2020.

The report also delved into the management of pandemic relief programs, finding some of them were susceptible to fraud. The Farmers-to-Families Food Box Program, it notes, was “used as a partisan tool to secure political advantages” for Trump himself. Under this program, the administration handed out hefty contracts to unqualified distributors with red flags in their applications, partly because USDA personnel didn’t even bother to contact the references listed on their applications. In fact, the recipient of one early contract simply wrote: “I don’t have any.”

The report’s key points include how the Trump White House “instructed CDC career scientists to destroy evidence of political interference,” “pressured the Food and Drug Administration to authorize ineffective coronavirus treatments,” “neglected the pandemic response to focus on the 2020 election and the ‘Big Lie,'” and “used personal email accounts to conduct official business.”

All in all, the report concluded, the Trump administration’s series of actions during this critical time amounted to “one of the worst failures of leadership in American history.”

There is one absolutely essential thing to know if you want to understand the odd behavior of Trump and why he is such a disaster:

Trump has never had direct contact with the world the rest of us live in. For the rest of us, our actions have consequences throughout out our lives, and so we learn as we live. Not so with Trump. He has lived a life free from accountability. And as a result he has never learned very basic things that ordinary people would expect him to understand. He is not bright, neither is he competent in even a basic way.

Living in this bubble has left Trump under the impression that he can do no wrong because he has always avoided consequences. Its not that he is a pathological liar, its that his definition of the truth is whatever he has decided it is. And this is subject to change on a whim.

This is also why he has had to surround himself with attorneys like Michael Cohen.

For example, Trump will tell you he built his business, when in reality he inherited his business: buildings, wealth. Employees all of it and he repeatedly lost vast sums of money repeatedly because he is not even marginally competent. He lost billions.

Why then was he a hit with the apprentice? This tv show was built around him, and had a set of producers who every week contended with Trump’s unpredictable irrational behavior, forcing them to scramble misrepresent the behavior of all the contestants so that each week his behavior would seem brilliant instead of merely irrational.

Think what this means: Trump never reads. He was an awful student who never went to class. He never even read the Art of the Deal or any of the other books ghostwritten for him. The story behind all of his many business failures is always the same: he gets wind of an idea. He decides to run on it because he thinks he is infallible. Experts warn him that his proposal has obvious problems and he responds every time without fail that, no he himself is correct and to prove this he increases his investment in this dubious effort, thereby hastening its failure. But here is the thing: he also fails and he never is held accountable there is always a scapegoat.

The TV show rehabilitated the career of this bigoted lazy insecure loser but it also doomed our nation. 14 seasons of make believe TV somehow managed to persuade people that Trump was capable of making effective decisions, when this just is not true.

He literally thought covid would just disappear magically and go away because this followed the plot of the 70’s blockbuster the Andromeda strain, and whats more he literally believed that this had to happen this way since he had said so. This is how it worked on his TV show and he saw the Presidency as being no different.

Drawing on a computer screen to change the trajectory of a Hurricane makes sense if you are Trump. Building a wall that disrupts the agriculture economy to solve a border crisis that was not real makes sense. Believing that he won an election that he clearly lost also makes sense, in his weird delusional bubble. Our nation is now in crisis because too many Americans have chosen to ignore reality and join Trump/FOX/GOP in clinging to the delusion that Trump is a functioning adult, why? Because those who have been played for suckers by a conman are too cowardly to face the reality that they were taken by a cartoonish idiot backed by a network of conmen and a party leadership that views them as worthless.

Why was the Trump recording with Bob Woodward not front page news for a month? Trump himself admitted to being briefed on Covid being far more serious than the flu; and this was before he said covid was the latest Democrat hoax and it would be gone by Easter (of 2020). We have proof that he knew it was serious.
