Splinter Cell is highly regarded as one of the most prestigious franchises in the gaming landscape, a series that once stood toe-to-toe with giant franchises like Metal Gear Solid(RIP) and Hitman. For the past decade, demand for a new entry in the series has been high with fans hoping for an announcement on every E3 showcase by Ubisoft and I’m totally not saying that because I’m one of those fans sitting back watching those showcases live in my clown make-up or anything.

Well, it seems that for better or worse, Ubisoft has been listening to fan demand and that a new Splinter Cell game is actually in the works. Ubisoft has recently filed a trademark for a new Splinter Cell game at Justia Trademarks. According to the website, the trademark was filed last week on December 6th. The description reads, “Entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game for others over global and local area computer networks; Entertainment services, namely, continuing television programs and interactive television programs featuring comedy, drama, live-action, and animation, broadcast over television, satellite, audio, and video media; presentation of live stage show performances, presentation of live show performances by costumed characters, and presentation of live theatrical performances; production and distribution of television shows and motion pictures;”

2 days after Ubisoft potentially filed for the trademark, another leak emerged, the source being Tom Henderson. Tom Henderson is a renowned leaker and insider in the gaming industry. He mentioned in his tweet that this new Splinter Cell will be focused on an open world, something along the likes of Halo Infinite as well as being a….*checks notes* a “stealthier version of Assassins Creed” which is just the funniest thing considering what the Assassins Creed series used to be.

This also follows a report by VGC that mentioned a new Splinter Cell game being in development.

Going past the Halo Infinite comparison, I personally think a more fitting comparison of a stealth open-world game would be 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V or-God forbid-Ghost Recon Breakpoint. It seems Ubisoft are going to implement a similar formula into Splinter Cell as their other major franchises considering the open world focus.

Pardon the cynicism of my words, but I think fans of classic Splinter Cell should very well be content with Blacklist as the final entry in the series. Whatever Ubisoft will deliver here, it will most certainly not be the Splinter Cell that we are acquainted with. Though, as a word of hope, if there’s one thing that’s fascinating about this industry is that you can always end up being surprised by the unlikeliest of sources.

Please bring back Michael Ironside. The only real voice of Sam Fisher.

Open world. Sandbox. Minimal stealth. Microtransactions via skins. Will probably play like the latest Ghost Recons.

How can it be a rumour? They either have filed a trademark, or they haven’t.
