Her controversial multi racial kiss on screen, definitely was a direction not boldly gone before. She is a historical person and a fictional person, that will forever be part of human history.

Nichols planned to leave Star Trek after a successful 1st season to pursue a career on Broadway. Gene Roddenberry was crushed and asked her to take the weekend to consider.

That same weekend Nichols attended a local NAACP event where she was asked if she would meet a very excited fan. She accepted and was brought over to another table.

She was shocked to find that her “fan” was actually Dr. Martin Luther King. They spoke briefly and he explained that her show was vital to the black community, that critically, her part wasn’t a black role.

When she explained that it would be her last season King asked: “Don’t you see what that man is trying to do? Nichole, there is only one television program I allow my children to watch, and it’s yours”

I wish the last few years weren’t so challenging for her personally and physically. She is very possibly the most important actors of her generation.
