Born and raised in America - when I was a child, we had a teacher (old lady, Presbyterian minister's wife) who would teach us to leave "god" out, telling us that god isn't concerned with which country we belong to.
Edit: I want to add that this was in the mid-1990s, this lady was a volunteer who would help in the classroom and she was in her 70s or 80s at the time. She would have been raised saying the pledge without "under god", I think she was speaking from there. Older people back then (who I knew) didn't think it was appropriate or polite to discuss religion much and even my grandparents (Christian people) thought god being in the pledge and on all the money was too much. We're from middle America.
