My aunt lives next to a property that used to have a truly massive Garry Oak on it. The house was a run-down little shack because that's as big as a house as would fit on it with the tree, and the oak was a protected species.

A property development company bought the lot and then convinced the city that the oak was dying and in danger of blowing over onto adjacent properties. After years of legal wrangling it was cut down last year.

My dad is a woodworker so we went to pick up some scraps. The stump was nearly 5 feet across and perfect, unblemished wood. I know it sounds a bit "woo woo", but I had to put my hand on it to try and appreciate the sheer scale of it. While we were talking with my aunt and some neighbours plenty of people stopped to look, and every single one had to put their hand on the stump.

They're currently building a bland little condo building there now.
