When my nephew was born at 1lb 1oz, we made many jokes about the plastic bag. Aren't you supposed to keep kids away from those? What kind of doctor gives a baby a plastic bag?
We had to joke because we were all so scared and didn't know how to process.
He is a thriving kid in elementary school now. NICUs can be amazing places. The nurses there are so in tune with each child, seeing any change and addressing it in seconds.
My kid was briefly in the NICU when he was born and to this day I'm still in awe of how that whole floor operated. Spaceship-level technology, military-rigid discipline, and yet super warm and comforting for the parents. I'm thankful our stay was brief, I can't imagine what some of those families had to go through.

Who is the "they?" Saying a patient has no chance of survival could put a doctor in a lot of legal trouble.
