61 years ago today, federal marshals escorted 6-year-old Ruby Bridges to her 1st day of school (1st grade), as the 1st Black student to attend previously all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana.
"Former United States Deputy Marshal Charles Burks later recalled, 'She showed a lot of courage. She never cried. She didn't whimper. She just marched along like a little soldier, and we're all very very proud of her.'"
I was lucky enough to meet Ruby about ten years ago when she spoke to my class. She’s an incredible human being.
The white parents all pulled their kids out of the school because Ruby was attending. She was the only student in her class for a year. Her father lost his job. Her grandparents were turned off their land.
