New York (CNN Business) A record 4.4 million Americans quit their jobs in September as the sheer volume of available jobs is empowering workers to have their pick.

Workers are quitting in search for better pay or better jobs, representing a fundamental shift in America's labor market

"Labor now has the initiative, and the era of paying individuals less than a livable wage has ended," said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US. "This strongly suggests that rising wages are going to be part and parcel of the economic landscape going forward."

The nation had 10.4 million open jobs that month as the worker shortage crisis continues, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed Friday. It was a modest decrease from the 10.6 million open jobs in August.

Jobs particularly increased in the health care and sector and in state and local government.

there is a really stupid game i have to play with my corporate boss.

When I have a doctors appointment and I request a few hours off, he denies it and says he can't get coverage for that part of the day.

If I request the ENTIRE day off for a doctors appointment, he will deny it and tell me I can only take a half day because he can't get coverage.

So I request an entire day off, knowing it will be denied and I will have to resubmit the request for a half day, which will get approved.

and I am quitting in two weeks when I get back from vacation, because this place is a bunch of bullshit.

It’s interesting that this coincides with the start of the school year too. Child care is more expensive and because people don’t want low paying jobs daycare centers can’t find workers and have had to cut back on the amount of children they can care for. Some parents probably had to quit to stay home with their kids or found it wasn’t worth it when most of their pay went to day care. The fact that so many people quit when you would expect children to go back to school proves there is a much larger issue with employers.

I quit my job. My boss was my friend. I've never ever worked with someone so tight fisted. Every receipt I submitted came with a major battle. Gas receipt? Battle. Replace consumables? Battle. So I got hired in Maui on a different project and I leave Sunday. Aloha
