Every generation makes fun of or tries to imitate the slang of the following couple of generations.
When I was a teen, texting had become a normal thing (Although, some phone plans were still charging $0.30/text!). Our generation immediately found ways to make texting easier on our nokia bricks by using abbreviations and emoticons. The older generations loved printing articles about "cracking the code" of text speak. It's been a bad joke since jokes have been told.
