Amazon Games’ New World Has Lost Almost 70% Of Its Players Amazon Games' MMORPG is down by almost 600,000 concurrent players in under a month.

New World has been of the most awaited games to be released in 2021. After months of delays, Amazon Game Studios’ highly anticipated MMORPG was finally released on 28th September, exclusively for PC on Steam. In only a few hours since release, the game received more than 700,000 concurrent players on Steam and reached an all-time high of almost a million concurrent players, which made it the #1 most played game across the storefront on its first day. However, things don’t seem as promising for the game now as they used to be.

Currently, New World sits at slightly over 300,000 concurrent players (nearly 30% of its entire player-base upon release) and is the #3 most played game on Steam, with CS:GO and DOTA 2 averaging more than twice the number of concurrent players every day. While the game has an astoundingly strong beginning, New World doesn’t seem to be as engaging for players now as it was when it was released.

Still, Amazon Games Studios is trying to keep the game fresh by adding in new content every now and then. Similar to what Epic Games and many other companies do with their games, New World also continues to receive events and exclusive cosmetics for players to stay engaged with. However, it doesn’t seem to be working as well for the game as it does for others like Fortnite.

Despite having many of its issues resolved, the game continues to decrease in players every day and considering that it costs $39.99, these players are certainly exhausted from it. For an MMORPG that has been designed to have players playing it forever, this sudden fall isn’t negligible either. There isn’t one particular reason why players seem to not want to play New World anymore. However, most of the complaints from the game are about it being too monotonous.

At the moment, New World has a number of issues that need to be resolved. For instance, players with RTX 3090 GPUs reported during the beta version of the game that the GPUs were being stopped working completely after playing it, with only some making it past the menu screen of the game, and the issue has carried on to the released version as well. According to many players, New World is causing bricking issues for GPUs and this time, it’s not restricted to any certain one. While it’s unsure if this is a game issue or not, it’s definitely a concern for players playing New World.

So we knew this was going to happen. We have people sending in emails that their GPUs are no longer working after playing New World. All this means is they didn't play the beta and we were anticipating those that didn't to have the same issues. — PowerGPU® (@PowerGPU) September 29, 2021

Fortunately, Amazon Games Studios is actively working on resolving these issues, Yesterday, the game received an update in which many of the bugs and server issues have been resolved. However, the major concerns still remain and if these continue, New World won’t stop losing players anytime soon. There certainly is something that’s causing so many players to suddenly stop playing New World.

After spending hundreds of hours on the game, there isn’t much to do. There’s no clear narrative to the game and Amazon Games Studios doesn’t seem to have any plan for the future of New World either. Currently, the company is more focused on resolving server issues for the game and, perhaps, we’ll see the trend change as it starts focusing on the game’s experience for players instead. However, New World is just not what it used to be and the company certainly needs to address this concern.

I'm still playing and having fun, but the game has so many issues that kill my motivation.

The last straw for me might be the pvp mass invuln exploit. We had a war to maintain control of our town last night, and the enemy team mass exploited. Essentially they got onto control points, and made themselves invulnerable by exploiting a bug with dragging a windowed screen around. 30 minute war over in 8 minutes because most of their team was literally untargetable.

No one expects Amazon to take any punitive action or roll back wars even with evidence of mass exploiters. If cheaters and exploiters are rewarded by getting to keep their ill gotten gains, what motivation do rule-abiding players have to engage?

Here's the real kicker: Controlling towns is critical for large companies because it generates tax revenue for the controlling company based on crafting and trading charges, plus housing fees. My company spent weeks and tens of thousands of coin to build up these crafting stations to be the highest level on the server - only for it to be stolen through exploits. So now I'm expected to funnel coin directly to these cheating assholes. I'd rather leave them to play by themselves than directly fund their cheating.

The only thing that's going to bring me back at this point is a mass ban wave, which Amazon won't do because it would ban such a large portion of their remaining playerbase.

I’m one of them. And it’s because I cannot connect to the game.

The game worked fine up until a few updates ago and now connecting to the servers requires about 10 restarts of the game.

Tech support has been zero help. Googling my problem found hundreds of posts across many websites (including the subreddit) with people all having the same problem, all having no answers or solutions and no luck with tech support.

So now my enthusiasm is dead and I don’t even bother anymore.

Well, the biggest issue with the game is the lack of anything interesting to do at endgame. While it's not an uncommon issue with MMOs, they really should have had a little more foresight considering this was the main complaint of people in the beta.
