Trump Wanted to 'Stay in Power Forever' Like Putin, Says His Ex-National Security Adviser

A former top national security adviser to Donald Trump said the ex-president admired Russia's Vladimir Putin and wanted to "stay in power forever" like the strongman leader.

"He saw Putin as the kind of epitome of the badass populist, frankly, you know, the kind of person that he wanted to be: super-rich, super powerful, no checks and balances, and essentially being able to stay in power forever," Fiona Hill, who previously served as senior director for Europe and Russia on Trump's National Security Council, told Molly Jong-Fast of The Daily Beast on an episode of The New Abnormal podcast uploaded on Sunday.

Trump's affinity for Putin has long been criticized, as the former president often appeared to be publicly defensive of the authoritarian Russian president before and during his tenure in the White House.

Putin has held power in Russia as either president or prime minister since 1999—more than two decades. He has routinely been accused of jailing, poisoning and killing his critics and political opponents throughout his tenure leading Russia.

Hill also told Jong-Fast that Putin appeared to use women to distract Trump in his interactions with the former U.S. president.

"Putin made a big point, a big show of introducing Trump to the [female] interpreter," Hill said. "Here's a really pretty woman. She's also a brilliant interpreter, but it was clearly meant to get Trump to look at her and not to be paying attention to what Putin was saying," the former Trump administration official explained.

Trump routinely has spoken favorably of Putin and his leadership of Russia. Many in Washington—Democrats and Republicans—raised concerns about the former president's apparent affinity for Putin, as Russia has long been seen as a top adversary of the U.S. on the world stage.

The former president's connections to Russia also came under intense scrutiny and investigation from Democrats, some of whom alleged he was compromised by Putin due to his financial and business ties to the country. The 2016 Trump campaign's interactions with Russia were probed as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Moscow's meddling in that presidential election.

Many Democrats alleged that Trump colluded with Russia in its effort to undermine former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign. Mueller's probe concluded that Russia interfered in a bid to benefit Trump but did not find evidence to demonstrate that the Trump campaign was working with the Russians.

Trump and his administration regularly pushed back against accusations that he was working to benefit Russia. The former president would point to harsh sanctions implemented by his administration against Moscow, as well as his decision to give Ukraine weapons amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump also strongly opposed the Nord Stream 2 pipeline being constructed between Russia and Germany, which would provide Russian natural gas to Europe.

Newsweek reached out to Trump's press office for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

It goes without saying that Trump supported, protected and above all else, admired Putin

Donald Trump

- Praised Putin constantly, called him a "strong leader", has peddled statements like "he's done a really great job outsmarting our country"

- Trump dismissed and cast doubt about Russian hacking, particularly when the U.S determined that Russia hacked the DNC in 2016, while ironically enough, he encouraged Russian cyber attacks on national TV saying, "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,"

- When addressing Russian election interference and cyber attacks, Trump proclaimed "I don't see any reason why it would be Russia" after speaking directly with Putin, defending Russia and trusting Putin over our own intelligence agencies. Later he "corrected" himself, claiming that he meant to say "wouldn't" instead of would.

- Trump suggested the U.S. work directly with Russia on cybersecurity.

- Trump dismissed the notion that Putin was a "killer", downplaying the idea that Putin resorts to using violence and oppressive tactics to crush political opponents. He defended Putin declaring, "There are a lot of killers. Do you think our country is so innocent?"

- Trump shared highly classified U.S. intelligence with Russian officials in the Oval Office in 2017.

- Trump constantly attacked NATO, aligning himself with Putin.

- Trump thanked Putin for expelling hundreds of U.S. diplomats as a retaliation for sanctions.

- Trump refused to make a statement about the 10th anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war. According to John Bolton, European leaders noticed Trump's silence and "became even more concerned about American resolve."

- According to congressional testimony, Trump declined to publicly condemn a Russian attack against Ukrainian military vessels in November 2018, even though the State Department prepared a statement for him

- Trump congratulated and gave legitimacy to Putin's re election win in 2018, a victory said to "lack genuine competition"

- Sergei Skripal, an ex Russian spy that defected to the UK, was poisoned. Sanctions were announced, Trump attempted to rescind them, while asserting that the U.S. was being "too tough on Putin"

- When congress passed new sanctions against Russia in 2017, Trump was very reluctant to signing the bill, and probably wouldn't have signed it if the bill didn't pass with veto-proof majorities in both houses

- Trump praised and highlighted pro-Russian leaders in Europe. Far right European leaders with close ties to Putin. He even met a Kremlin ally at the Whitehouse.

- When Trump withdrew troops from Syria, it gave Russia and Putin an opportunity to control abandoned U.S. outposts and checkpoints.

- Trump froze U.S. aide for Ukraine in it's war against Russian proxies. He repeated Russian disinformation surrounding Ukraine as well.

- Trump made requests to bring Russia back into the G7 and invited Putin to the 2020 G7 summit

And this isn't including everything surrounding the Mueller investigation. It was reported that when Trump first heard about the Mueller probe he immediately exclaimed: "This is the end of my presidency, I'm fucked!". That's not the reaction of an innocent man. Mueller recognized potential obstruction of justice charges against Trump as well surrounding Trump's actions during the investigation along with a complicit William Barr and DOJ that committed to the notion that no sitting president can be charged with a crime. Furthermore, Trump hired Paul Manafort to run his campaign. Manafort spent years working and cultivating deep relationships with Russians and pro Russian politicians, he made millions of dollars overseas and more importantly lied to investigators about feeding U.S. data to a Russian spy.

Trump admired Putin's despotism, he admired Putin's penchant for silencing and stamping out political opposition. He admired Putin's reign, his power, his command, dominance, and authority. Trump's goal wasn't just to retain power indefinitely, it was to emulate his role model. But Trump more than anything desired admiration itself. something Putin has been able to cultivate, albeit unfaithfully and often times ostensibly, empty, as more or less a political spectacle. It was all a part of an effort from Trump to cater to his own unmatched narcissism, a narcissism not even rivaled by Putin himself.

Trump wanted to turn his image, his presidency, into a pageant, into a similar spectacle. It would become the best way to feed his fragile ego. Trump probably believed, in his twisted mind, that if he ever lost an election it would amount to some great humiliation, some unfathomable defeat, something that he is utterly incapable of comprehending, even acknowledging. That's why Trump manufactured the big lie, that's why every election he loses is "rigged", why when Ted Cruz won a primary, it was "rigged", why when Clinton won the popular vote in 2016, it was still "rigged" despite the fact that Trump won that election. It's why the 2020 election was "stolen" from him. Hell, it's why the Emmys were "rigged" when The Apprentice failed to win an award. Trump's ignorance, his weakness, his insecurities are what drive him, he's an incredibly flawed and frail human being. In his mind, absolute, unobstructed, and everlasting power means never having to face his own weakness, his own failures. When in reality, he is at his core just that, a comprehensive failure.
