I'm from the UK. My wife is from the US. She was so excited to move to the UK at first, having this romanticized view of a land of history, of tradition and the home of her favorite band, The Beatles.
After a few months she began to see the real UK. Drunken journeys home on the tube and regional trains out of Waterloo. Kebabs on the way home from town on a Friday night. Christmas number ones and reality TV. Traffic jams in small suburban villages. Tiny parking spaces and Sunday trading. Shops that all close at 6pm for some reason. Madlads with shiny pointy shoes and shinier shirts out on the lash.
I'm starting to feel a bit homesick.
Edit: told my wife about this and she reminded me that her impression of the UK can be summed up with the songs "I Predict a Riot" by Kaiser Chiefs and "When the Sun Goes Down" by Arctic Monkeys.
