I'm born and raised in Texas as well as being a 5th generation Texan on both sides of my family. I think it's important to note about what really is going on here and it's getting lost in the media cycle, which is what Abbott wants.

Before the ice storm that knocked out the power for the majority of Texas power came Abbott actually wasn't a extremely conservative governor. He actually enacted mandates and closed restaurants is restaurants to protect people from covid 19.

However, before Abbott was governor he was the Attorney General of Texas. As the Ag of Texas he is the one that successfully sued to get Texas off the national power grid and on their own. He then put all the board members of ercot, the people responsible for the Texas power grid, in place. I've got friends in the assembly in Austin and the rumors is ercot is a roughly 40% of Abbott's donations so he does everything for them.

After the power grid failed Abbott knew the only way he could remain in power, and keep ercott out of the news, was to change the subject at every available turn. The week after the Winter storm he got rid of coronavirus mandates. All of the other far right things followed closely after, and therefore he did what he wanted to, change the subject completely.

And it worked.....

Edit: I will admit when I am wrong and it's my fault for not doing the research. I know there was a lawsuit saying Abbott sued for something involving the power grid as AG but until I can find it I will say do not take that part of my post as truth. I do know now that Texas was on their own power grid before Abbott was AG so my apologies

"'The unborn' are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn.

You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe.

Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn."
