Are you in Europe somewhere? I remember those butterflies from when I grew up in Germany, but I've never seen one in the US.
(Actually, the roof kinda gives it away. We don't have those either)

That, I believe, is referred to as European Peacock (Aglais io)! Those "eyespots" are a deterrent to airborne/Avian predators.
