Northern Michigan meteorologist fired from TV station after 30 years after refusing COVID-19 vaccine

A man who spent more than 30 years reporting the weather on TV in northern Michigan is out of a job.

Karl Bohnak says he was fired at WLUC after refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Bohnak says control over his body should be up to him.

He says he was fired at WLUC for not following a vaccine mandate from the owner, Gray Television.

Bohnak began working at WLUC in 1988. He says the Upper Peninsula was one of the most challenging places in the U.S. for weather forecasting.

As someone who grew up watching Karl, and having been a self-proclaimed “weather nerd” as a kid (he was super cool and sent me an anemometer/rain gauge combo!) this was super disappointing news.

I know several anti-vaxxers who continue to act as if their employer can’t fire them for not being vaccinated, and stories like this don’t scare them because they think the laws are on their side.

We’re going to see more of this. He claims he has a right to control what goes into his body. His employer has a right to choose who they employ, though. Will be interesting to see the court rulings on this.

Edit: I realize the law and precedent means that any lawsuit fighting this is bound to fail, but as we’ve learned in the past year, politically motivated lawyers will file lawsuits without regard to facts or settled law.
