I’ve tried this several times and I can confirm that the ducks absolutely will not give a fuck about your peas and grapes and will actually stare at you as if you have a fundamental deficiency.
It’s a complex debate actually. Bread usually only causes issues if fed in large quantities. The RSPB doesn’t strongly recommend bread, but also doesn’t discourage it, merely deferring to better alternatives.
The Queen’s Swan Marker released a statement which says the ‘Ban the Bread’ campaign caused deterioration in swan numbers - I assume this may translate to ducks also - particularly when food is scarce in winter and the bread helps keep them fed.
