I think a lot of people forget that a lot of business - even in NYC - kept on going. I have cousins in NYC who witnessed the towers going down who literally had to go back to work
UPS is how I first knew something was wrong. I work nights, and typically get up around noon. On 9/11 I had a package arrive early. I woke up, answered the door and got my package. The guys expression was so strange my first thought after I shut the door was, 'I should turn on the TV' instead of going back to sleep. This was after the first tower was hit but before the second one was struck.
