I wanted to share this post because my grandpa is an amazing human. His parents were immigrants. He grew up in a rough part of Manhattan. He was drafted at age 18 to fight in Korea and saw things no teenager should have to see. He never speaks about those days.

He joined the seminary and became a Deacon. He devotes his life to serving others. And on 9/11, even at 71 years old, he rushed into the city to be of service as a fire chaplain. To offer support to those working as first responders in the horrific aftermath of what happened.

He doesn't talk about it. He doesn't acknowledge that what he did was anything special. And so I wanted to. Because I love him, and the older I get the more I learn about him.

And dammit, I live far away and miss him. Hug your grandparents. Listen to their stories. Take notes.

Thank you everyone, for letting me share this, and for listening. This anniversary is hard for so many people, and especially those who lost loved ones, or had loved ones who suffered lasting effects from working at Ground Zero. Emotionally and physically.

Humanity was at its worst that day with the actions that led to this utter destruction.

And yet, it allowed so many to be at their best...

I’m not religious in any way but a chaplain changed my life after my mom died and I’ll never forget the value of their work.

He looks wildly good for being 71 here.
