I once served in the us navy with a Russian, we were the same age (19). He would sometimes tell stories of his hardships, being orphaned at a very young age and eventually finding himself in America, fostered to some nice grandparents. The way he rationalized/said things was hilarious to me, I think he had such a genuinely real and leveled outlook on life. One of the proudest patriots of this country that I've ever known. I feel pride just for having served with him.
Also, dude had the grip strength of a thousand oxen and I'm sure he warped my skull from squeezing it when we had a big brawl in the machinery room with the torpedoman. Bit of friendly fire haha.
