Thanks to a tip from a local friend who alerted me when she spotted "some computer stuff in a dumpster outside a house that's being renovated," I am now the delighted owner of a game I've wanted since I was a kid: the original IBM-published "King's Quest!"

This game was initially developed by Sierra and funded by IBM as a showcase for their ill-fated PCjr computer, and it was pretty cutting-edge in 1984. It featured a sophisticated (for the time) branching storyline by the incomparable Roberta Williams and relatively smooth multi-color animation. This was the first adventure / RPG game that incorporated an animated player-character, which was a huge evolutionary step away from earlier text-based games like Zork. I'm so excited to have found this!

If you're curious to see what else I pulled out of this insanely-packed dumpster, take a look at my Twitter thread here - it's pretty wild!

I love this game, but what misleading cover art!
