According to Wikipedia...

Some of the invaders in the history of Afghanistan include the Maurya Empire, the Greek Empire of Alexander the Great of Macedon, Rashidun Caliphate, the Mongol Empire led by Genghis Khan, the Timurid Empire of Timur, the Mughal Empire, various Persian Empires, the Sikh Empire, the British Empire, the Soviet Union, and most recently a coalition force of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops

When the BBC did the Sherlock series, I thought it was an under-rated callback that the original John Watson was in London recuperating from an injury suffered in a war in Afghanistan, and the modern John Watson was also in London recuperating from an injury suffered in a war in Afghanistan, and they were both absolutely accurate to the period.

Some things remain constant.

Very short (~3 mins) but informative History Matters video on this idea of Afghanistan as "the graveyard of empires." Short story short; basicly people like fitting things into boxes and ignoring evidence to the contrary while exaggerating supporting evidence. Generally makes for a better story I suppose. https://youtu.be/jO1UXqXMI4I
