The Mujahideen did NOT split into Al-Qaida and Taliban.

After the Soviets pulled out, the Mujahideen fought amongst themselves for power. It was a bloody civil war.

From the refugee camps in Pakistan, Pashtun tribesmen who were learning to read at various religious schools, formed together into a group called the Taliban. Taliban means students.

They came in to Afghanistan and ended the civil war, but imposed their own harsh, austere lifestyle onto the country, and brutalized the rest into submission.
