There was a Movie called "The Horsemen" made in Afghanistan in 1971. It had Omar Sharif and Jack Palance.
In the movie Kabul was very modern in ways of the West. But, all the outlying areas were run by tribal warlords. I don't think that it is much of a stretch to say that Afghanistan is a very poor country that time and time again barely crawls out the Genghis Khan era only to fall back into it.
