Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is responding to comments made by Fox News host Tucker Carlson regarding her fears during January’s attack on the Capitol.

During Thursday’s episode of his show Tucker Carlson Tonight, the FOX News host mocked AOC’s concerns about potential sexual violence during the insurrection on January 6. Ocasio-Cortez recently told CNN’s Dana Bash that the attack on the capitol touched on traumas she experienced as a survivor of sexual assault. “I didn't think that I was just going to be killed,” AOC said in her interview. “I thought other things were going to happen to me as well.”

In his August 12 episode, Carlson aired a clip of AOC’s conversation with Bash, commenting that the congresswoman should “get a therapist,” adding “this is crazy.”

AOC responded on social media the following day, directing her commentary to the common fears that many survivors hold of not being believed about their traumas. “I couldn’t care less about what this talking inferiority complex has to say, but I do feel for the women and survivors in his life who now see they wouldn’t be believed or safe with him,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter. “Many survivors of assault don’t tell family, friends, etc bc of how they see others treated.”

Ocasio-Cortez has been transparent with her constituents and the public about being a survivor of sexual assault after first opening up earlier this year, shortly after the attack on the Capitol. During a lengthy Instagram Live in February, AOC shared that she had been sexually assaulted in her past — a detail that not many people in her life knew about her until that day. “When we go through trauma, trauma compounds on each other,” she explained. “Most people live with trauma.”

During that IG Live, AOC emphasized the importance of accountability while pushing back against the urge to gloss over the incident that took place at the Capitol. “We cannot move on without accountability,” she said. “We cannot heal without accountability. And so all these people telling us to move on are doing so at their own convenience.”

I am frustrated by this headline (et al regarding this exchange). I wish they would highlight the more poignant part of her statement.

When Fox blondes talk about Mexicans coming to America to rape white women they're describing a "very real threat."

When a woman of color talks about being threatened with rape by white men, Fox says she's making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Lesson: It's OK for white men to rape women of color, but not for men of color to rape white women. So very, very Fox.
