Dude was with another marine when the Taliban tossed a grenade into their position. He dove on top of the grenade, resulting in these injuries. Guy is an absolute hero in every sense of the word.

Its amazing what plastic surgery can do. When I was 10 I was mauled by a dog who messed up the left side of my face real bad, punctured my left ear, pretty much tore my cheek out. My dad said it was still the most gruesome thing hes ever seen. They flew in one of the top plastic surgeons in the entire world from Beverley Hills and with the exception of a few hard to notice scars, you'd never know what happened to me.

This guy looks really good for what he went through. Glad to see things worked out for him.

When I see this picture all I can see is a child in military dress. I don’t mean that disrespectfully, I mean I’m 36 and at the time of this picture he was 21 (I would have been 25 then). He just looks like he had so much youth and so much life ahead of him and he almost lost it all for a war that did so little.

Crazy respect to people who choose the military, but this just feels like such a bad consolation prize for what he suffered, especially considering why he suffered. Definitely a hero, but uncertain if he should have ever been in the situation to begin with. I think a lot of kids end up in the military because they didn’t have better economic opportunity or needed money to go to college… a little policy change and a tweak to the military budget may have kept him and others from having to become a hero in the first place.

But, final thoughts, still a hero.
