The old building I used to live in in Chicago had a square cut out of the wall in the kitchen next to the back porch door, with small doors on both sides. It looked like it had some sort of function so I asked my old lady resident what it was for and she said that's where they used to deliver the ice blocks for your ice box (aka refrigerator). Pretty neat.

My simple mind is still blown by ice production before freezers.

Cut huge blocks of ice from a lake, insulate them with owod shavings and they’re good for months? Amazing.

Question. Was that natural ice or man-made ice ?
