Drift racing staged at pedestrian area of Sophiyska Square in Kyiv for a Red Bull commercial production brings disruption and damage to the historic place.

The commercial production featuring Ukrainian rap artist Alyona Alyona was staged without permits and drew backlash from Kyiv officials and social media users.

The video posted by Saint Sophia Cathedral administration on Facebook shows a video production team filming two racing cars drifting around Bohdan Khmelnytsky monument.

Kyiv City Council said the commercial production had no proper permits for filming at Sophiyska square and reported the incident to police for further investigation.

Kyiv officials aruged the production team failed to put up security fencing exposing to danger pedestrians while its race cars damaged the clinker brick pavement with tire marks.

Police informed they opened a probe into the video production incident and are set to bring charges of disorderly conduct against the alleged offenders.

The video was produced by Ukrainian office of Red Bull. The energy drink company posted several photos of the filming process at Sophiyska Square on its official Instagram account but soon deleted them following the barrage of criticisms. The photos showed Ukrainian rap artist Alyona Alyona who was reportedly set to appear in the commercial.

In his Facebook post, Kyiv deputy mayor Kostyantyn Usov confirmed Red Bull was not granted a permit for filming at Sophiyska square and argued that such production required a separate approval from administration of Saint Sophia Cathedral conservation area that is listed as UNESCO object.

He also provided rough estimate of damages claiming the commercial production damaged over 2,000 sq.m of yellow clinker bricks.

One of the Red Bull race car drivers involved in the commercial shoot was Oleksandr Grynchuk, who regularily posts stories about his extreme drifting experience on Instagram. In 2019, he shared a photo from his drifting race performance in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, with a caption ‘It was great, would be great to make it again’.

Later that day, Red Bull production crew were seen at Sophiyska square trying to remove drift marks.

The company representatives said ‘it will be better than it was’, but at that point their efforts yielded no results whatsoever – the paved square was black for skid marks and absolutely wrecked, said ‘European Solidarity’ MP Oleksiy Goncharenko.

The title is wrong, the square itself is not historical, the St. Sophia cathedral nearby is an 11-th century historical monument.

The shit crumbling tile bricks you can see in the photos were laid by our corrupted city mayor of two corrupted city major generations ago. Driving a car there will add some extra holes in the pavement, and the cathedral doesn't look so good with tire smudges in front, the square is a popular pedestrian area so it's a dick stunt.

Drifting is the most boring of car "racing" styles. It's art, not racing and should be decided by a panel of judges like in gymnastics
