Tennessee state GOP Rep. David Byrd is urging people to take COVID-19 seriously and get vaccinated after his eight-month struggle with the coronavirus, in which he was hospitalized and put on a ventilator for 55 days.

In a statement on Friday, he said he was diagnosed with COVID-19 the day before Thanksgiving and admitted to the hospital on December 5.

He had voted for a resolution in June 2020 that accused the media of sensationalizing the COVID-19 pandemic.

But after having COVID-19, Byrd said he wanted people to take the virus seriously, saying it's real and dangerous.

Byrd did not directly deny the accusations but said he was unable to recall the incidents the women described. »

US vaccination rate hits the highest pace in weeks

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Sunday that 816,203 additional doses were administered, the fifth straight day the agency recorded more than 700,000 shots in arms.

That brings the total number of doses administered to 346,456,669, according to the CDC numbers released Sunday.

The seven-day average of administered doses is now 662,529 per day, the highest average since July 7. »
