Do they all get a new shirt with a different number when they hire someone new?

Ahh yes... there's a Burger King in my neighborhood, has one employee. She was the manager, cashier, cleaner, cook, all in one. Poor lady, I hope they at least bumped up her pay.

I was once working nightshift at a fast food restaurant in the town I grew up in. This was the only place in town of 15,000 that was open 24/7 that had food (if you ignore gas stations and convenience stores).

Our nightshift was usually only two people. Myself (manager), and a maintenance worker who also did food prep. This was usually okay as most of the night we would only get a handful of orders every hour (in the daytime we could do over 100/hour). Also, with the way our scheduling system worked, maintenance workers technically didn't count as staff on floor (this was just so we had a way to do a staff : orders ratio).

Every so often there would be a crazy night out of nowhere and you just had to bear with it. Most people were understanding. Some weren't and as a result all the cops in town knew me on a first name basis.

ANYWAYS - as the morning came (5-6am) it would naturally get busier and busier, and pray chaos wouldn't happen before 6 as that's when the next shift came in. One particular day we were getting slammed pretty good just before the 6am crew.

One guy who had ordered a meal couldn't believe that he waited 10 minutes, and loudly exclaimed "ARE YOU THE ONLY ONE WORKING HERE OR SOMETHING?! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!". I gave him one of those 'calm but serious' stares, and replied "Yup. Since 10pm."

I don't think that was the answer he was expecting as he immediately avoided eye contact and replied "...oh.", and drove off.
