Black soldiers in WW1 were treated like shit by the US, and were used for lifting and carrying because command didn't think they had the moral fortitude to fight in battle.

The harlem hellfighters (369th infantry regiment) were attached to the French army in 1918, where they were treated with respect by French command and their fellow soldiers. They served with distinction, before returning to an ungrateful and hostile nation that had owned them as slaves a generation ago, and passed laws to treat them as lesser.

Do his eyes look wet because they were welling up, or because the long exposure made him stare into the camera for many seconds without blinking?
