My maternal grandfather told us that he had a chance of inheriting one of the peribacası (earth pillar homes) but he -as everyone of his time did- had chosen “the plottable land” option and gave the pillar shaped stone house to his sister instead. One of my early visits to Göreme, I met with great-aunty, his sister; she was still living in the stone pillar home. She was the last one to live in though, as the gov. didn’t let the property to transact with inheritance and paid a quite sum and turned it to protected status as the rest. They have been doing this expropriation begining after the UN listing world heritage for some time, however couldn’t evacuate great-auntie due to her age. I mean… F..k money, How cool it is to live in 1000s of years old stone house carved out of pillar shaped geological phenomenon?
