Stephen’s coke dealer had an eye for photography.

Fun story:

When I moved to Bar Harbor many years ago, my new friends and I heard that Stephen King put on a haunted house around Halloween. So we all packed into my van, drove the hour, and pulled in front of his house. It was still daylight when we got there and everything looked quiet, so we got out of the van and walked up to the side entrance of the house to ask when the haunted house would start. A gentleman opened the door, we asked our question, and we hear from further inside the house, "Goddamnit, there hasn't been a haunted house for years...&$@-$(!".

I wonder how many times people (more than likely dumb college kids) crashed his place asking about the haunted house.

Here’s the thing about Stephen King that only people from Bangor know: despite the fact I never saw those awesomely spooky gates open, he’s a great neighbor.

He built the city a youth hockey arena, and put someone else’s name on it.

He built a $1.2 million youth baseball stadium, and put someone else’s name on it. Apocryphally, when a minor league team wanted to use it, he supposedly said ‘no, it’s for the kids.’

He helped double the size of the public library with a $2.5 million donation on top of leading a fundraising campaign. He’s supported the children’s museum and the local hospital’s pediatrics wing.

He’s done a lot else for Bangor, but those are just the ones I can think of.

In short, growing up in Bangor Maine, four hours north of Boston and civilization (Portland wasn’t cool at the time) was a hell of a lot better than it could have been thanks to one guy who basically wanted to be left alone but still gave back to the community.
