They're looking at you to see how to respond. If you have a "oh fuck, that looks like it hurt!" open-mouth look on your face, they're gonna scream.

Pro-Tip: Try and make a joke out of it.

I mean, if they’re obviously hurt, and need medical attention, don’t make light of it.

But if it’s just a bump on the head, I have avoided many screams and tears by running up to them and laughing (with them) and asking if the floor was okay. “Oh my gosh, I think you put a dent in the wood!”

Even if they’re hurting, if you’re quick enough on your feet, you can distract them enough and hopefully make them laugh enough, that you can skip the tears and skip right to taking care of them.

Edit: This works on adults, too. Distraction and humor is a great pain medication.

Extra Edit: Thanks for my first ever Reddit award, stranger! You’re helpful, too! 😎

Extra extra edit, since that’s what we do here on Reddit: Thanks to all the kind strangers and awards! As long time lurker and first time actual user of Reddit, it’s a hell of a welcome! Y’all are my gold! 👍
