Nancy Pelosi's office calls Trump a 'twice-impeached Florida retiree'

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office in a statement called Trump a "twice-impeached Florida retiree."

The top Democrat said Trump disrespected police officers who defended the Capitol on January 6.

Thursday's statement came after Trump said the Capitol riot suspects were being treated unfairly.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday mocked former President Donald Trump, referring to him as a "twice-impeached Florida retiree."

"Twice-impeached Florida retiree — and de facto leader of the Republican Party — Donald Trump," Pelosi's office said in a statement.

The California Democrat went on to criticize Trump, saying he was "disrespecting the Capitol Police and other law enforcement officers" by defending rioters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6.

Trump during a press event on Wednesday said the deadly insurrection was "unfortunate" and the Capitol riot suspects "are being treated unbelievably unfairly."

He is "decrying how rioters 'are being treated unbelievably unfairly' now that they are facing legal consequences for their actions," Pelosi's office said. About 550 people have been charged in the Capitol insurrection so far.

Trump also called out the unidentified police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt as she tried to climb through a window in the House while members of Congress were being evacuated.

"But the person that shot Ashli Babbitt — boom, right through the head, just boom — there was no reason for that," Trump said. "And why isn't that person being opened up, and why isn't that being studied? They've already written it off. They said that case is closed."

The Department of Justice announced in April that it would not pursue charges against the police officer involved in the shooting, concluding that there was "insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution."

The House of Representatives in January voted to impeach Trump over his role in the Capitol insurrection, which made him the first president in US history to be impeached twice. The House first impeached Trump in December 2019 on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for seeking election assistance from Ukraine.

The former president on Wednesday spoke from his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course, where he is staying over the summer, away from his primary residence in Florida.

The longtime New York resident changed his home address to his Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach in September 2019. At the time, he said the decision was "best for all concerned," adding that he'd been "treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state."

Trump permanently relocated to Florida after leaving the White House earlier this year.
